Despite the bad weather, this CBC had the highest species total ever, with 344 spp. and 8,351 individuals and a cumulative spp. count of 473 for all years. 6 new species were added to the count list: Anas americana (American Wigeon), Morphnus guianensis (Crested Eagle) Columba livia (Rock Dove), Geotrygon lawrencii (Purplish-backed Quail-Dove), Panterpe insignis (Fiery-throated Hummingbird) y Dendroica striata (Blackpoll Warbler).

The 2000 La Selva Christmas Bird Count (Lower Braulio Carrillo National Park.- La Selva Biological Station) was the highest since the survey was initiated 16 years ago in 1985. The count date was December 30th and ran from 00:00 hours to 24:00 hours. The count covered a 7.5 mile radius (177 square miles) centered 1.7 miles south of the Magsasay shelter on the Peje River.

Seventy-one people participated in the count (63 Costa Ricans) representing various organizations (UCR, UNA, Naturalists Guides of Sarapiquí) and including other ecotourism guides and amateur birders who were organized into 22 parties. Fourteen parties walked the La Selva trails, and boated the Sarapiquí and Puerto Viejo rivers. Eight groups surveyed the Braulio Carrillo Corridor at the 500 m , Ceibo, 1070 m transect trail shelter sites, Tirimbina Rainforest Center, Chilamate town, Terra Folia, Rara Avis Lodge and roads in open country. A total effort of 221 hours of observation and 159 miles of travel resulted in 344 species and 8,351 individuals recorded.
