The CBC was very succesful, despite the bad weather, with 326 spp. (one of the three highest of the 15 counts) 8,962 individuals and 467 cumulative spp. counts. Besides adding 2 new species to the count list (White-winged Dove Zenaida asiatica y White-Throated Flycatcher Empidonax albigularis), this year’s count had the highest number of indifiduals of all counts.
The 1999 La Selva Christmas Bird Count (Lower Braulio Carrillo National Park.-La Selva Biological Station) was one of the most successful since the survey was initiated 15 years ago in 1985. The count date was December 19 . and ran from 00:00 hours to 24:00 hours. The count covered a 7.5 mile radius (177 square miles) centered 1.7 miles S of the Magsasay shelter on the Peje River.
Sixty-one people participated in the count (42 Costa Ricans) representing various organizations (UCR, UNA, Museo Nacional, Naturalists Guides of Sarapiquí) and including other ecotourism guides and amateur birders who were organized into 22 parties. Fourteen parties walked La Selva trails, the Sarapiquí and Puerto Viejo rivers. Eight groups surveyed the Braulio Carrillo Corridor at the 500m , Ceibo, 1070 m transect trail shelter sites, Tirimbina Rainforest Center, Chilamate, Gavilán Lodge, roads in open country, and at Rara Avis Lodge. In all 326 species and 8,962 individuals were observed, resulting in one of the highest counts.
